Graharipu - Abhira king of Saurashtra

 Graharipu was a powerful ruler of the Abhiras in the mid-10th century A.D., who established his capital at Vamanasthali (present-day Vanthali near Junagadh) and brought large parts of southern and western Saurashtra under his control.The great Jain scholar Hemchandracharya clearly mentions him as an Abhira, confirming his dynastic identity and historical importance. This reference strengthens the view that Graharipu was a proud Abhira ruler whose power and legacy were acknowledged by contemporary scholars

The Chudasama were an Ahir ( Abhira) clan of Gujarat, and they were not subjects—they were rulers. For centuries, they held authority over Saurashtra, governing it as an independent power with strength and pride. The Abhiras were spread across Saurashtra and Khandesh, both sovereign regions. From around the 10th–11th century A.D., rival Kshatriya powers repeatedly tried to uproot them. Almost every major Deccan force rose against the Abhiras—but the Chudasamas did not fall easily. They resisted for nearly 500 years, often fighting alone, surrounded yet unbroken. During the Chaulukyan expansion, the Abhiras faced invasions led by rulers like Mularaja of Anhilwara. Even then, they were acknowledged as formidable warrior rivals. The great Jain scholar Hemachandra, in his Dvyāśrayakāvya, honors Graharipu as a mighty Abhira–Chudasama king of Saurashtra, a clear testament to their royal status and power.
